FRAMED
$7500. |
Na Piko is a one of a kind artwork that is made on and comes from the island
of Kaua`i.
Na Piko refers to a personʻs three piko. The one at the top of the head connects
with the kupuna, or ancestors.  The piko in the middle connects to oneʻs mother, and to
the present generation.
The third piko connects to all future generations. Na Piko is made entirely of natural
materials grown, or collected, on Kaua`i. The base material is kapa, or bark cloth, that is
pounded again and again until the fibers of several wauke (Brousanettia papyrifera) stalks mesh
together and spread out.
All of the materials in this artwork are grown and made on Kaua`i. The wai ho`olu`u,
or dyes, are made from maʻo hau hele (Hibiscus brackenridgei), `olena (turmeric or
Circumua domestica),`alaea (ocherous earth), and wauke charcoal.
